Preventive Care for Young Adults in Fortitude Valley

The teenage and young adult years bring plenty of change, including new independence, busy schedules, sport, study, work and social lives. These years also bring particular challenges for oral health. Preventive care helps young people build habits that support healthy teeth and gums well into adulthood.

At Precision Dental, we speak with young adults respectfully and directly, giving them the information they need to make good decisions about their own health.

What Is Preventive Care for Young Adults?

Preventive care for young adults includes regular check-ups and cleans, early detection of decay, monitoring of developing wisdom teeth, and advice on the lifestyle factors that commonly affect oral health at this age. It also includes protective measures such as fluoride treatments, fissure sealants where appropriate and custom mouthguards for sport.

Is Preventive Care Right for You?

Preventive care is valuable for teenagers and young adults, especially those who:

  • Are becoming responsible for their own dental routine
  • Play contact or ball sports
  • Regularly drink soft drinks, energy drinks or sports drinks
  • Have, or are considering, oral piercings
  • Smoke or vape
  • Have wisdom teeth that are developing or causing discomfort
  • Are thinking about straightening or whitening their teeth

Eligible teenagers may also be able to access benefits under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Examination and Imaging

We examine the teeth, gums and soft tissues and check the bite. Where appropriate, a digital OPG allows us to assess the position and development of wisdom teeth.

Professional Clean

Plaque and tartar are removed, and teeth are polished. Fluoride may be applied to strengthen enamel, particularly for those at higher risk of decay.

Honest Conversation

We talk openly about common risks for this age group. Sugary and acidic drinks can erode enamel and increase decay. Oral piercings can chip teeth and damage gums. Smoking and vaping can affect gum health and stain teeth. Where concerns exist, we also discuss the effects of frequent vomiting on tooth enamel in a caring, confidential way and can recommend appropriate support.

Looking Ahead

If you are interested in Invisalign or teeth whitening, we can discuss whether these are suitable once your oral health is in good shape.

Aftercare and Ongoing Care

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth each day. Choose water over soft drinks and energy drinks, and wear a custom mouthguard for all contact training and games. If you have a piercing, check it regularly and consider removing it during sport. Keep up regular check-ups, especially while wisdom teeth are developing.

Payment plans are available through DentiCare for eligible patients, subject to terms and conditions. You can learn more on our Prices and Payment Options page.
