Custom Mouthguards in Fortitude Valley

Whether you play rugby, netball, hockey, basketball, soccer or martial arts, dental injuries can happen in an instant. A custom-fitted mouthguard is a simple, effective way to help protect your teeth, lips, gums and jaw during sport.

At Precision Dental, we make custom mouthguards for children, teenagers and adults, designed around the shape of your teeth.

What Is a Custom Mouthguard?

A custom mouthguard is a protective appliance made from a precise scan or impression of your teeth. Layers of durable, shock-absorbing material are moulded to fit your upper teeth closely, helping spread the force of an impact and reduce the risk of broken teeth, knocked-out teeth and soft tissue injuries.

Compared with over-the-counter or boil-and-bite guards, custom mouthguards typically offer a closer, more secure fit. A comfortable guard is easier to breathe and speak with, which means players are more likely to wear it consistently.

Is a Custom Mouthguard Right for You?

We recommend a mouthguard for anyone who:

  • Plays contact or collision sports
  • Plays ball sports, including cricket, hockey, basketball or netball
  • Participates in martial arts, boxing or skateboarding
  • Has crowns, veneers, bridges or implants that need protection
  • Wears braces, where specialised guards may be required

Children's mouths change as teeth grow, so mouthguards for children and teenagers often need replacing more frequently. If you grind your teeth at night, a different appliance known as a night splint is used, which we discuss on our grinding and clenching page. Patients undergoing Invisalign treatment should speak with us about sport protection.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Assessment

We check the teeth and gums to make sure there are no concerns that should be treated before your guard is made. We also discuss your sport, so the thickness and design suit your level of play.

Scan or Impression

A digital scan or impression records the shape of your teeth accurately. This usually takes only a few minutes.

Choosing Your Design

You can select colours to suit your team or personal style.

Fitting

When your mouthguard is ready, we check its fit and comfort and explain how to care for it.

Aftercare and Ongoing Care

Rinse your mouthguard with cool water before and after use, and clean it gently with a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water, which can distort the material. Store your guard in a ventilated case, away from direct sunlight and heat, such as a car dashboard. Bring it to your check-ups so we can check its condition. Replace your mouthguard if it becomes worn, damaged or loose, or if your teeth have changed.

Why Choose Precision Dental for Mouthguards

We take accurate digital records of your teeth, tailor the design to your sport and check the fit carefully. For growing children, we monitor changes as part of their children's dentistry visits and advise when a replacement is needed.

Fees, Health Funds and Payment Options

The cost of your treatment depends on your individual needs. After your examination, we talk you through your options and the expected fees before any treatment begins. We accept most major health funds, process claims on the spot through HICAPS and are a preferred provider for Bupa, HCF and CBHS. Payment plans are available through DentiCare for eligible patients, subject to terms and conditions. You can learn more on our Prices and Payment Options page.
