Prompt, Calm Care When You Need It Most

Dental emergencies can be painful, worrying and disruptive. Whether you have woken with a throbbing toothache, cracked a tooth on something hard or had a knock during sport, our team is here to help. We set aside time each day for urgent appointments and will do our best to see you on the day you call.

Our priority at an emergency visit is to relieve your discomfort, find the cause of the problem and stabilise the tooth or area. Once you are comfortable, we explain what we found and talk you through the options for ongoing treatment.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any problem that causes significant pain, bleeding, swelling or damage that needs prompt attention. Common examples include:

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • A broken, chipped or cracked tooth
  • A tooth that has been knocked out or pushed out of position
  • Swelling of the face, gums or jaw, which may indicate an abscess
  • A lost filling, crown, inlay or onlay
  • Injuries to the lips, cheeks, tongue or gums

If you are unsure whether your situation is urgent, please call us. Our team will ask a few questions and help you decide on the next step.

When to Go to Hospital

Some situations need immediate hospital care. If you have facial swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, a suspected jaw fracture or a head injury, call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

What to Do While You Wait

Stay calm and call us as early in the day as possible. Rinse gently with warm water, use a cold compress on the outside of your face to help with swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packaging if it is suitable for you. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, as this can irritate soft tissue.

What Happens at Your Emergency Appointment

When you arrive, we will ask about your symptoms and medical history. We then examine the area and take digital X-rays if needed to understand what is happening beneath the surface. Once we have a clear picture, we explain our findings and focus on relieving your pain. This may involve smoothing a sharp edge, placing a temporary filling, draining an infection, beginning root canal therapy or protecting a damaged tooth. If further treatment is needed, we will talk through your options and costs before booking a follow-up.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We keep time available for urgent care and will do our best to see you on the day you call. Calling early in the day gives us the best chance of finding a suitable time.

Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse it with milk if it is dirty. If you can, place it back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth, or keep it in milk, and call us immediately.

For most tooth pain, breaks and lost restorations, a dentist is the right place to start. If you have swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, a jaw fracture or a head injury, go to a hospital emergency department.

Some problems can be managed for a short time, but pain, swelling and damage often worsen without treatment. Please call us for advice, as early care may help avoid more involved treatment later.

Yes. We see children for dental injuries and pain, and we take extra care to keep them calm and comfortable. Bring your child in as soon as possible after an injury.

The cost depends on the examination, any X-rays and the treatment required. We will explain the expected fees before we begin, and we process health fund claims on the spot through HICAPS.
