What Is a Children's Dental Emergency?

A children's dental emergency is any injury or problem affecting a child's teeth, gums or mouth that causes pain, bleeding, swelling or damage. Common examples include:

  • A knocked-out, loose or displaced baby or adult tooth
  • A chipped or broken tooth
  • Toothache or swelling, which may indicate infection
  • Cuts to the lips, tongue or gums
  • Something stuck between the teeth

Caring for baby teeth and adult teeth after an injury differs in important ways, so it is always worth calling us for advice.

Important

When to Seek Care

Call us as soon as possible if your child has:

  • A knocked-out adult tooth, which needs care within 30 minutes
  • A knocked-out or pushed-in baby tooth
  • A broken tooth or visible pink or red spot in the centre of a broken tooth
  • Toothache, facial swelling or fever
  • A tooth that has changed colour after an injury

Call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department if your child has a head injury, has lost consciousness, has swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that will not stop.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

Stay calm and reassure your child. Rinse their mouth gently with water and apply pressure to any bleeding with clean gauze. A cold compress can help with swelling.

  • Knocked-out baby tooth: do not put it back in. Keep it and contact us for advice.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, rinse briefly in milk if dirty, and replant it if possible, or store it in milk. Call us immediately. Our knocked-out tooth page has more detail.
  • Broken tooth: keep any fragments in milk and bring them with you.

Give pain relief suitable for your child's age and weight as directed on the packaging.

What Happens at Your Appointment

We greet your child warmly and move at a pace that feels comfortable for them. We gently examine the injured area and take digital X-rays if needed to check the roots and developing adult teeth. We explain our findings to you and your child in simple terms. Treatment depends on the injury and may include smoothing or repairing a broken tooth, splinting a replanted adult tooth, treating infection or managing soft tissue injuries. Our goal is to relieve discomfort and protect developing teeth.

Aftercare and Ongoing Care

Offer soft foods for a few days and help your child keep the area clean with gentle brushing. Watch for colour changes, swelling or pain over the following weeks, as some injuries show effects later. Follow-up visits allow us to monitor healing and the development of adult teeth. For sport, a custom mouthguard helps protect growing smiles.

Why Choose Precision Dental for Children's Dental Emergencies

Our team takes a gentle, reassuring approach with children and involves parents in every decision. We also provide ongoing children's dentistry, so your child can return to a familiar place for follow-up care.

Fees, Health Funds and Payment Options

The cost of your treatment depends on your individual needs. After your examination, we talk you through your options and the expected fees before any treatment begins. We accept most major health funds, process claims on the spot through HICAPS and are a preferred provider for Bupa, HCF and CBHS. Payment plans are available through DentiCare for eligible patients, subject to terms and conditions. You can learn more on our Prices and Payment Options page.

FAQ

No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the developing adult tooth. Contact us for advice.

Children usually have baby teeth until around age six, when adult teeth start coming through. If you are unsure, treat it as an adult tooth and call us immediately.

Discolouration can indicate that the nerve has been affected. Please book an assessment so we can monitor the tooth.
